FOURS

4-4.5 YEARS

The Full-Day Fours focus intently on the business of learning. Logical thinking, organization, prediction and problem solving now play larger roles, as does responsibility. Children “sign in” as they arrive, then independently consult the day’s schedule and job chart. Through group activities such as building and cooking, Fours investigate number relationships, sequencing, symmetry, and the fundamentals of emerging literacy. They build important friendships, enjoy quality literature and share in robust outdoor play. Creative opportunities, such as music, gardening, art, chess and optional instrument lessons add to their week.

During carefully planned neighborhood studies children learn about their world. They visit a nearby post office, bookstore, and restaurant to learn what it takes to provide the services they do. They interview chefs, managers and clerks, then reflect together on what they’ve discovered. Often this reflection leads to the creation of their own model bakery, bookstore or pizzeria which they proudly open to the school.

As they transition to kindergarten, children leave Third Street Preschool confident in their ability to make meaning of their experiences and eager for new friendships and new challenges.

THE PROGRAM

Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.

INTENTIONAL PLAY

Intentional play is celebrated at Third Street Preschool as a powerful tool for learning and growth. Play is recognized as a medium through which children develop creativity, social skills, and cognitive abilities. Tactile play develops fine and gross motor skills, physical play stimulates growth, and make-believe play accelerates social-emotional learning.

Through guided and imaginative play, children explore their interests, express themselves freely, and build a strong foundation for a lifelong love of learning.

MUSIC AND THE ARTS

Music and the arts play a prominent role in the educational experience at Third Street Preschool. Recognizing the transformative power of artistic expression, the school encourages students to explore their creativity and self-expression through various artistic mediums. Whether through music, visual arts, or performing arts, children are given the opportunity to develop their artistic talents, fostering a well-rounded and enriched educational experience.

EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING

We respect young children’s eagerness to experiment first hand, something John Dewey refers to as “learning by doing.” Whether they are visiting our garden, constructing a block tower, mixing a new color or responding to a story, children interact with their environment, using it as a springboard for critical thinking and creative expression.

Enrichment Opportunities

Chess is offered to the Fours as an add-on school activity. Taught through personalized, interactive lessons by instructors from the US Chess Academy. Lessons are weekly for the entire school year.

Preschool Instrument Program (PIP) is an exciting exploratory introduction to music making for our Fours. This year our PIP offerings include piano, ukulele, guitar, violin, and toot (beginner flute).

Third Street’s best instructors, who are experienced in early childhood instruction, teach lessons weekly and they conveniently take place during the school day. This program not only introduces preschoolers to the magic of music but also serves as a bridge to formal music lessons beyond preschool. By incorporating music education seamlessly into their daily routines, Third Street Preschool fosters a deep appreciation for music and encourages young learners to continue their musical journey, setting the stage for a lifelong exploration of the musical arts.
