SPECIALS

Incorporating specials like music and movement, visiting the art studio, and library time into our preschool day nurtures creativity and imagination but also improves readiness skills (such as early literacy, math, and motor skills), fosters a love for reading, and introduces children to different forms of expression.

Our Specialist teachers come from varied backgrounds in the performance and visual arts and do not only teach our preschoolers but also perform, create, and nurture their own art practice. They bring their expertise to our school contributing to the growth and learning that takes place here.

Creative Movement invites children to explore various ways to express themselves through shape, gesture, and action. Children will learn gross motor coordination with challenging footwork and balances and create short dances alone and in groups. Young dancers will move to music, stories, and poems, galloping and leaping, body drumming and rolling, blossoming and falling like leaves. This class is a beautiful introduction to the expressive and creative act of dancing, that will serve children as they grow as artists, athletes, and communicators of all styles!

Instrument Exploration. In this class, children develop the foundational skills they need to be successful and joyful young musicians. Children will practice listening to sounds and responding - singing, moving, and playing a variety of percussion instruments. Several times throughout the year we welcome visiting musical artists along with their students. In this enriched environment, we explore a variety of sounds and genres of music.

Children will experience instruments from the string, wind, brass, and percussion families, giving them an opportunity to listen, look, and touch in a careful way, while also having a window into the world of children who play a musical instrument in private study.

Creative Exploration. A magical movement and music experience, this class weaves movement, song, and story into a lively and creative experience. Children share their moves as they respond to original music and movement under the guidance of legendary early childhood teacher Mik Manenti.
