Learning at Third Street

Every year Third Street welcomes thousands of people to experience the joy and benefits of learning music and dance. Whether you're interested in playing an instrument, singing, dancing, creating, or composing, you can expand your musical horizon with us by learning different styles and genres.

How We Teach

A Traditional Approach to learning an instrument is generally for students who already have developed fine motor skills and who are able to simultaneously focus on multiple facets of instrument study. This includes the ability to listen, read notes, and the physical coordination of handling an instrument. This approach is appropriate for children ages five and older, depending on the instrument.

There are many methods for teaching music. The most effective teachers bring the best of what they have learned through their own training and experience and develop an approach that enables them to respond to the needs of each individual student.

In general, the traditional approach to music study integrates note reading and playing with a customized repertoire based on the student’s needs and interests.

The benefits of individual lessons at Third Street:

The Suzuki Method

The Suzuki Method is recommended for beginning string, flute, and piano students ages 3.5 and up. Developed by Dr. Shinichi Suzuki, the Suzuki approach is based on how children learn their native language - exposure, action, and repetition. Pieces are learned by ear and played from memory, and lessons are paired with a weekly repertoire class that immerses students with others at their age and skill level. Parental involvement and group learning are core components of this approach and note reading is taught at the appropriate time.

HALLMARKS OF THE SUZUKI METHOD:

  • The method is based on the way children learn their native language—by listening and imitating. Pieces are learned by ear (without reading music) and played from memory; note reading is incorporated later on in the child’s training.
  • Parent, teacher and child are all active participants in the learning process. Parents must be willing to learn the instruction method and make a commitment to attend lessons, group classes and performances. Parents are also required to participate in at-home practice.
  • The curriculum uses a common repertoire which is organized by books of advancing levels.
  • In addition to individual, partner or group lessons, Suzuki students are required to attend a weekly repertoire class. The purpose of this class is to review and reinforce pieces learned in lessons while developing musicality and ensemble playing skills, often using games to highlight important technical points and encourage music reading.

FLEX PASSES (2, 4 or 8 hours) offer adults flexibility in scheduling their lessons and the opportunity to try a new instrument out before making a long-term commitment. they include either 2,4 or 8 hours of individual lessons that are scheduled at a date and time that is mutually agreed upon by teacher and student.

CLASSES ranging from music theory and composition to improvisation and music production, students can enhance their learning experiences with supplemental classes. Students enrolled in individual lessons receive a significant discount on these classes.

ENSEMBLES are an integral part of learning to become a musician and artist, our ensembles cross departments to create orchestras, bands, jazz ensembles, chamber groups, choirs, rock bands, and more! Discounts are available to students enrolled in individual lessons at Third Street.
