Third Street Music School Annual Report
From the Executive Director, Valerie G. Lewis

Dear Friends and Supporters
It is a joy to welcome you to Third Street Music School Settlement’s first annual report. As I reflect on the 2025-2026 school year, I am filled with gratitude for our community’s support and proud to share this glimpse of all that we accomplished together.
For 132 years, Third Street has been an artistic oasis where students of all backgrounds come together to make music, study dance, build confidence, and create community. We believe that all New Yorkers deserve the opportunity to experience the empowering force of arts education. With that belief at the heart of our work, we proudly brought music and dance to over 6,500 students from across all five boroughs last year. From our after-school and weekend lesson and ensemble programs to our teaching artist residencies in dozens of public schools to our enriching community concerts and events, Third Street is thriving.
At a time of so much uncertainty in the world, access to arts education is vital for students to express themselves, discover their voices, share their culture, and imagine the possibilities the future holds. Your support opens doors, removes financial barriers, and helps ensure that every student can find a place at Third Street.
As you explore the stories and milestones in this report, we hope you will see the impact of your partnership in the lives of our students, families, and community. Thank you for your support.
Sincerely,
Valerie G. Lewis
Anna-Maria Kellen Executive Director

Music & Dance Highlights

Orchestras Celebrate America 250
With support from The Dreitzer Foundation and Rea Charitable Trust, ISO at Third Street Symphony Orchestra gathered together to film a music video commemorating 250 years of our country's history.
With their instruments in hand and their heads held high, they kicked off the event with a passionate rendition of John Philip Sousa’s
The Stars and Stripes Forever, our country’s official national march. They then followed with John Williams
Cowboy Overture from the 1972 film The Cowboys.
Music Therapy Program Launch
For the first time in its 131-year history, Third Street launched Music Therapy to expand our services to students with disabilities.
Music therapy is the clinical and evidence-based use of music and movement to address the physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs or goals of individuals through a therapeutic relationship.
Music Therapist and LCAT Ariel Weissberger began offering weekly clinical sessions for seven-school aged students in winter 2026. One 13-year-old participant with autism initially sought Music Therapy instruction as an avenue to develop both musical and social skills. Throughout the spring semester, the student developed a strong relationship with the music therapist and increasingly engaged in conversation, listening, and collaborative music-making, supporting their communication, flexibility, and self-acceptance.
We look forward to expanding Music Therapy in the years ahead through increased instructional hours, small-group therapy offerings, and programming for adults.

Third Street Partners
Third Street Partners creates teaching artist residencies in underserved NYC public schools, public housing, and community centers to address gaps in access to arts education.
To ensure equitable access for the most high-needs communities, Third Street fundraises to cover 50-100% of program costs across all sites.
Partners Program Highlights

Partnership with Grand Street
With support from the Hearst Foundations, the Charles D. Flesichman Charitable Trust, the Michael Tuch Foundation, and generous others, Third Street launched a new partnership with Grand Street Settlement to bring afterschool music and dance instruction to four new sites.
Like Third Street, Grand Street was founded over a century ago to support immigrants arriving in NYC and shares the belief that access and opportunity help communities thrive. “To really be useful to a community, we must listen to the voices of its stakeholders,” said Program Manager Maria Kowalski.
In response to Grand Street Middle School students, Third Street teaching artists provided DJ instruction and equipment for the first time in Third Street Partners’ history.
Early Childhood Strings Program
In partnership with the NYC DOE and City Council, and with support from a Third Street alumnus, Third Street has launched innovative early childhood violin instruction at PS29 in Staten Island and PS123 in Harlem.
Designed to address inequity in access to string instruction for early childhood learners, this program provides small group violin instruction to the same group of students multiple times a week for four years, from PreK through 2nd grade. As a result, students who may otherwise lack access to arts education will be positioned to achieve success equal to that of their privately instructed peers as they move on to play in ensembles or audition-based programs.
Third Street Preschool
Third Street Preschool engages students in a play-based curriculum designed to enhance all areas of a child’s development and promote a lifelong love of the arts.
Third Street Preschool Highlights

Light Museum
With support from our families and an anonymous foundation donor, our preschoolers transformed their classroom into a glow-in-the-dark Light Museum this past winter.
Complete with handmade art installations, cozy reading corners, and puppet shows, the museum brought warmth to some of the coldest days of the year. The museum included glowing art installations, cozy reading corners, a puppet show, and a display of hand-painted doves that students created in connection with their study of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and in recognition of his lifelong advocacy for peace. The museum brought warmth and light to some of the coldest days of the year.
Giving Back
Third Street is possible because of support from our community. Our youngest learners are beginning to explore what it means to support one another and help others.
Every Thanksgiving, we partner with Saint Mark’s Church across the street for our preschoolers to host a food drive. In preparation for the holiday, students collect canned goods, create paper leaves describing what they are thankful for, and venture to the space where people will be eating to deliver their gifts.
FAMILY SPOTLIGHTS
THIRD STREET PRESCHOOL

SARAH - I grew up in the neighborhood, and I started coming to Third Street when I was five or six years old. For years, I took piano and guitar lessons, and I was always here. It was my second home.
I love being a Third Street parent for the same reasons as I loved being a Third Street student—it's a second home. It really is a second place to be.
Whenever we walk by on a Saturday or after hours, Jess, my daughter, wants to go to the courtyard. She wants to go inside and see what's around. It's not just a place to spend a few hours each day. It's a place to be—and to be happy.

ALEX - I came to Third Street when I was two years old. I’m actually still friends with two friends I met in preschool. One of my son’s teachers, Mik, was also my music and movement teacher.
When we were picking our son’s school, we looked at a bunch of places. But when we came to Third Street, I just felt that all the incredible things I remembered hadn’t changed at all—the teachers and the staff are great, and the music is wonderful. The kids do music every single day, it seems like.
And my son loves music, so it was just a perfect fit.

LUCAS - Third Street is a safe, encouraging space for young people—people of all ages—to embrace their creativity and musicality. And it's a really important space for the community because it has consistently offered accessibility to these lessons and this education.
I came here from around 2001 to 2006—for after-school lessons, taking guitar and some piano. I met so many great friends here.
We decided to send our son here, first off, out of familiarity and trust. When we were first pregnant, we always foresaw that it'd be great to send them here. And he loves music. Even from a young age, he's always been very attracted to that. So we are very happy that that is really part of the core curriculum here.

HANNAH - The preschool is a very special place because it does a child-led, child-centered curriculum so well.
As a parent and alumnus of Third Street, I've obviously always been very drawn to the community here, and it's a lovely group of teachers, so I was very excited to join the ranks with the rest of the amazing staff.
BOARD Of DIRECTORS
THIRD STREET MUSIC SCHOOL
Board Member Spotlight
Ariel Fausto
Ariel discovered Third Street by accident over ten years ago on his way to work. As a principal at the architecture and design firm H3 he works with a portfolio of performing arts clients. He said, "I was captivated by the mysterious-looking building with a huge fire escape in front and music pouring out from all sides."
Ariel has served as a board member for over 10 years. He has played a critical role in the renovations to create our state-of-the-art performance space and improved classroom and shared spaces. He has also been a lifesaver in keeping our 200-year-old building in top shape.
Asked why he joined the board in the first place, "I consider myself a New Yorker and as such, you have to believe deeply in and contribute to what makes New York great - like Third Street."

Board Member Spotlight
Jeff Peretz
As a faculty member at Third Street for over 18 years, Jeff Peretz has built a musical legacy. He founded the Rock Band Program, produced the very first recording studio, and wrote guitar manuals in the BK studio all while in between songwriting classes. Reflecting on his time as a teacher, Peretz said, "My lineage came through Third Street."
Today, as a member of the Board and musical director at the Clive David Institute of Recorded Music at NYU, his passion for the school has remained strong. "Third Street was founded with the spirit of the East Village community, and to this day, it still evokes the community," he said. "Third Street has a soul; it has character!"
A powerful advocate for arts education, Peretz loves Third Street because it fosters creativity for anyone who gets involved. "When you support Third Street, you preserve the community, and you protect the arts for future generations," he said. "What could be better? That's why I am proud to be a part of the Third Street community."
