FY23 Demographics Reported June 2023

Serving BIPOC Students - Theory of Action Highlights

  • Our vision for equity: Third Street Music School as a whole is a place which is diverse by every measure, and where BIPOC students and their families genuinely feel welcomed, valued, represented, nurtured, and supported
  • Goal: Address inconsistencies colored by race or racial bias when it comes to purpose, collaboration, communication and intent among the many smaller “communities” within our larger community

ACTION ITEMS

  • Go in person to partner schools to bring information about Partners at Third Street to make sure that the information is getting into the hands of all the students and their families
  • Broaden availability of opportunities for growth for students within and across departments
  • Ensure that we are looking at the full age spectrum of students including preschool age and adult students
  • Advocate with other community music schools to enforce the importance of arts education, especially in terms of authentic self expression and social-emotional learning
  • Survey our families to better ascertain and not assume our BIPOC students/families needs
  • Continue to offer professional development opportunities to faculty to reinforce understanding of the varying needs of BIPOC students/families.
  • Consider institution-wide strategies to communicate with a more diverse audience, given varied messages and constituencies

Hiring - Theory of Action Highlights

  • Vision for equity: A faculty and staff in which Black, AAPI, Latinx, Indigenous, and multiracial people are more robustly represented
  • Goal: Increase percentage of BIPOC faculty year-over-year to build towards a staff/faculty that is more reflective of the community that we serve; sustain diversity of the administrative staff

ACTION ITEMS

  • Analyze hiring policy/protocols, consider inclusion at all phases of the process
  • Develop relationships with organizations/institutions affiliated with BIPOC musicians
  • Utilize existing faculty and staff connections to organizations that are affiliated with BIPOC musicians
  • Build and maintain database of resources that help department chairs and directors broaden networks (professional development, training, conferences, events, performances)
  • Implement reduced biased training for all hiring managers
  • Anticipate vacancies (allowing more time to recruit/hire new candidates)
  • Post job openings more broadly; internally and externally

FY23 Demographics Reported June 2023

Thank you!

For over 125 years our doors have been open to every New Yorker who shares our founding belief that a music education builds resilient individuals and vibrant communities. The nations longest running community music school, our home and programs have evolved with time, but our commitment to offering an affordable, high-quality music education remains.

Your support can empower thousands of youth to access transformative music and dance education and gain artistic skills that last a lifetime. From bequests to charitable gift annuities, all levels of generosity are deeply appreciated, and our thanks goes out to every donor, volunteer, and friend of Third Street.

Why We Give!

"We choose to support Third Street Music School and its programs to help ensure that students across the city have access to music and the arts. We both grew up in homes where our parents were active in our respective communities and in the arts in particular. This set an example for each of us that we want to pass on to our own child and getting involved, participating and-generally- giving back."

Paul Washington (left) and Stan Stagner with their son.

Why Should You Give?

  • Music and dance education can be life-changing for children and adults alike.
  • Participation in music and dance empowers. It is proven to help students improve written and verbal communication skills, academic performance, planning, and self-confidence.
  • Third Street's programs promote equity by ensuring New Yorkers of all socioeconomic backgrounds can access the countless benefits of music and dance education.
  • Third Street never turns away a student because of an inability to pay. Over 75% of students benefit from financial assistance.
  • Third Street promotes an inclusive community where students of all ages and backgrounds are welcomed, nurtured, and supported.

Support from Third Street's generous community ensures that students across the socioeconomic spectrum can access transformative music and dance education.

Original and classic Jazz performed by David Moreno and featuring Neal Kirkwood, Tarik Shah and Brandon Lewis.

Founded in 1972, the InterSchool Orchestras of New York (now ISO at Third Street) provides a comprehensive youth orchestra program that allows children to perform in an ensemble of their peers. Four graded orchestras lie at the heart of ISO’s programs, providing performance opportunities based on musical ability — not ability to pay tuition. More than 80% of our young musicians receive some degree of financial assistance.

We believe in the power of mentorship and the pursuit of excellence. Coaches rehearse and perform alongside our students in all ensembles. The six-to-one student-to-coach ratio is likely better than most students will experience in any other educational situation.

Our best students can become teachers to beginners through a teaching internship program. This develops the interns as teachers, provides them with meaningful community service, and helps educate the next generation of musicians.

ISO ensembles share their music with the community, performing at senior centers, churches, parks, and schools. It is particularly powerful when an ensemble of 6-to-10-year-olds performs for students of similar ages.

Playing music in an orchestra fosters a cooperative spirit, demonstrates that there is more than one valid interpretation of an idea, enhances students’ empathy for others, improves self-esteem, explores emotions, and makes students familiar with other cultures and periods of history. Whether students pursue careers in music or not, the ISO experience is something that makes a difference for their entire lives.

In October 2020 it was announced that ISO Ensembles would join the programs of Third Street Music School Settlement to create the largest and most expansive youth ensemble program in New York City. With a combined 175 years of experience in music education, this partnership galvanizes the missions of both organizations to ensure access to high-quality instruction for students from all five boroughs at a time when many music programs are closed because of the pandemic.
